A brush with death births in model Simone a desire to have a child, which sees her, with best friend Philippe in tow, decamp from Montreal to the Bonneville Salt Flats for a little destination procreation — but the lovin’ doesn’t come easy, and neither does Philippe. The key to understanding the later work of Denis Villeneuve, here in an uncharacteristically playful mood, this debut feature is an existential and visually-commanding ode to the Nouvelle Vague, complete with a Jean Seberg lookalike (Bussières), which proves the director has always been one to watch.
