Moses (Ryan) is a slick conman that gets unexpectedly stuck with the task of transporting recent orphan Addie (Tatum) to relatives in Missouri. As they travel, Addie learns from Moses how to con and swindle everyone they encounter. Tatum O’Neal is the youngest person (at age 10) to ever win an Oscar for her performance in Paper Moon. Fittingly, this is the finest performance by a child actor I’ve seen (outside of Bugsy Malone). I make sure to watch it once a year, in part thanks to Ryan and Tatum O’Neal’s unpredictable chemistry and the interesting mirror to their real life tumultuous relationship.”
