Melvin Van Peeble’s debut film is sharp, quick and biting. Turner, a Black American G.I. stationed in France, is given a few days off. He heads to Paris and winds up having a fling with a French gal, but it’s big trouble when some other soldiers spot the two together ’cause his superiors are racist shitheads. Shot through with the same style and verve as early New Wave, and all the fierceness of the Black rights movement – this is an under-seen, underrated gem.
